Dusting off Traditional Techniques

"Best practices" in the classroom aren't limited to modern ideas and concepts. In this workshop, we will take a look at seven principles of good teaching proposed by John Milton Gregory in 1884 to see how they can improve our teaching in 2023.

Literacy Beyond the Page

On the upper elementary and jr. high level, reading can sometimes become more of a drudgery than a joy - for students and teachers alike. Join us as we look at some practical ways to make reading come alive for our middle-level students.

Lightning Bolt Teaching

Rather than starting our lesson with an attractive yet passive hook, what if we began with a dynamic lightning bolt? How could it change our lesson? What would be the outcome? In this workshop, we will look at this technique, the unique outcomes it can have, and how to plan for the interesting results.

Rescuing Recess

If you asked a student what their favorite subject was, it would not be terribly surprising to hear, "Recess!" In this workshop, we will take a unique look at the history of recess as well as the crucial part it plays in our students' academic success.

The Joy of Umbrella Lessons

When teachers take the time to create "umbrella lessons," the results can spark unique learning opportunities for students of all levels. Join us as we define "umbrella lessons" and examine how their structure can aid learning and create an enjoyable and connected understanding of concepts.

The Partnership of Classroom Management

Classroom control is recognized as a key factor in the success of a classroom, but how does it actually work in a real classroom, with a real teacher and real students? In this workshop, we will look at the "three-fold cord" that is not easily broken (Ecclesiastes 4:12) and examine how building strong connections can serve to preemptively address any issues that may arise.

Bible Class: Aiming for the Heart and the Head

While it appears relatively easy to teach Bible in a Christian school setting, we must ask ourselves, "How do we balance the facts of the Bible with the practical application of God's Word in the lives of our students?" Join us as together we look at ways to aim our Bible class for the head as well as for the heart and allow room for God to do His work in our students' lives.

Planting Seeds of Deeper Thinking

For years, Bloom's Taxonomy has been recognized as an excellent measure of a student's depth of understanding, but how can teachers use this information in their classroom? We'll look at each of the six levels of understanding in Bloom's Taxonomy as well as ways to develop these higher-level thinking skills in even our youngest students.
